I was very excited when Drew and the Strands team announced oOo or Operation mainSTREAM and on October One, Two Thousand and Eight, it became a reality. Operation mainSTREAM is the idea that people outside of the tech bubble, circle, guild, team or world should learn and embrace these technology ideas and products because they can better their lives or businesses with them. Tools like Viddler, Twitter, or any of 37signals‘ products can benefit organizations today in ways they just don’t know about yet. And we’re here to help them learn it.
I put together a small list of ways that people can use some of our favorite technology products out there today:
- Soccer moms - Twitter or Upcomming from Yahoo come to mind here. Twitter could allow people to converse, share short stories of their children’s games, set up meetups to discuss events, recipes or just about anything else and then they can use Upcoming to make sure they know who is coming out.
- Lawyers - Tools like Wikis or Basecamp could be very helpful to this group of people. Unorganized information in an unorganized world could be organized and edited by a small firm of people who need to keep up with cases and laws.
- School teachers - Viddler could be used to help teach the class a school lesson while not in the classroom. Many colleges are already doing this but it’s not easy to access the info, special codecs (or software are needed) and it’s not nearly as cool as Viddler.
- Anyone who is looking for love - I could see a strong case being made for this group to use something like Strands to help find great matches through a great recommendation engine.
These are just a few but I want to hear from you. Leave a comment and you could win a nifty prize. It might be an invite code to a cool web service or it could be an awesome physical computer device… Who knows? But it’ll be neat, I promise. So I ask you — What other ways can you see some of our favorite web services work in the mainSTREAM?
